Noble & Co 2024 Fine & Rare Whisky Market Review reports that there has been a 16% decline in auction volumes and an 18% drop in value transacted. Bottles under £1,000 have shown relative stability, while the higher-value segments have faced sharper declines. Speyside remains dominant by value, while Islay and Campbeltown hold steady as collector favourites. The Macallan retains its lead, though overall volume has dropped by 51%. Springbank and Bowmore continue to capture attention with their premium offerings. Amid these challenges, the enduring appeal of fine whisky, driven by craftsmanship and heritage, provides optimism for market recovery.

Glendale's brand owner, Campbell Meyer, and its parent company JG Distillers are owned by Strathord Limited, a firm registered at a PO Box the British Virgin Islands, a Caribbean tax haven. 'Strathord, whose only meaningful trail on the internet is a brief mention in the Panama Papers, is managed by a veteran accountant in Guernsey.'

Juliet Swann, Nations & Regions Manager at the UK wing of Transparency International, is quoted in the article: 'UK companies must disclose who ultimately controls them, yet too often it's not their real owners you see on the public record.

'The opacity provided by the UK's offshore financial centres, such as the BVI and Guernsey, provide a smokescreen for those seeking to keep their identity secret.

'Were there greater corporate transparency in the BVI and the Channel Islands, and tougher enforcement of company law here, we'd know much more about this East Kilbride based company which seems to be doing business with a Russian firm.'

The ad stated 'shorter days mean we can skip to the good part'. By suggesting that 'shorter days' meant that consumers could 'skip to the good part' of the day the ad implied that the rest of the day was mundane and a period of time to be endured and that drinking alcohol could overcome the boredom of the rest of the day. Furthermore, because the ad encouraged people to start drinking earlier than they would at other times of the year, it encouraged people to consume more alcohol than they usually would.

City of London Police Says Stay Vigilant Over Misleading Whisky Investment Ads

30 November 2023

City of London Police urged people to take proper measures online, after whisky investment advertisements on social media left people high and dry.

"The lure for potential investors is that you buy a cask of whisky when it is first produced and as the whisky ages in the barrel, it becomes something worth more to the consumer and as such, your initial investment becomes more valuable."

"In 2023, there were 89 reports made to Action Fraud about alcohol investments, with losses totalling over £3 million. This shows that aside from misleading advertisements, fraudulent activity is taking place with whisky investments proving to be an enticing opportunity for unsuspecting investors."

The Strange Case of The Whisky That Never Was

8 November 2023

Whisky is investment gold - it always has been. But in the case of ‘cask investment schemes’, it’s an increasingly perfidious endeavour governed by parasitical imposters, posing as informed, knowledgeable and well connected members of the whisky trade. Auction Announces Sales of 24 Bottles of 'World’s Oldest Scotch Whisky'

Whisky believed to be distilled almost 200 years ago - and therefore the oldest known Scotch whisky in existence  - 'and possibly sipped by a young Queen Victoria' was discovered in 2022 behind a hidden cellar door of the 750 year old Blair Castle in Scotland... to be offered for sale at auction.

The 40 bottles of whisky are believed to have been distilled in 1833 and bottled in 1841 (then re-bottled in 1932). It is announced that 24 of the bottles will be sold at auction in November 2023.

ASA Ruling on Blackford Casks Ltd t/a Whisky Investment Partners

23 August 2023

Advertising Standards Authority concludes online ads for Whisky Investment Partners, a whisky cask investment company were misleading and could not be substantiated.

The online adverts claimed that 'Cask Investment Get Returns upto [sic] 12% Per Annum'. This was misleading because not only were the claims unsubstantiated by any evidence, they also did not make clear the risks involved in whisky investment.

The ASA also challenged that the ads were misleading because they did not make clear that fees applied, or that there were terms and conditions to the service; and adverts were irresponsible because they took advantage of consumers’ inexperience and credulity by suggesting that whisky investment was a suitable choice for retirement funds or for investment of savings.
