Secret Wine Buyer

A recent Wine Society purchase. This Languedoc red from mainly organic Syrah grapes has a silky palate of sweet black fruit, spices, gentle tannins, a nice freshness, and good balance. It was perfect with lamb tagine.

17/9/24, 'Vindubitabilis'

Discovered under the stairs, so it must be the last bottle of an 'en primeur' case. Classic Syrah characteristics of dark ripe fruit with some spice, along with soft tannins, good length, and a slight bitterness. A nice aged basic northern Rhône red.

12/9/24, 'Vindubitabilis'

Another seasonal star for slurping on the stoop. This is fresh, dry and balanced, with lovely aromas of citrus, apple and stone fruit, and crisp acidity and nice depth. No wonder it was a 2022 Decanter World Wine Awards silver medal winner.

26/7/24, 'Vindubitabilis'

A classic aged and still lively Loire red originally from the Wine Society. Plenty of ripe dark fruit, nice tannins, good acidity, a slight bitterness, and that characterful Cabernet Franc aroma of pencil shavings. From the fridge it is a perfect match for soft cheese and charcuterie.

A really remarkable Rioja for £15 at Tesco. Gorgeous sweet fruit, spices and creaminess, full-bodied and tannic. It is well-balanced, and will be good for another ten years. Perfect with Italian sausages and briam.

A lovely fresh, dry and flavourful Austrian Riesling, with floral, peach, apricot, and mineral notes. Summer in a glass for just £11 at Sainsbury's. Prosit!

Fabulous organic German Pinot Noir from The Wine Society. Not complex, but balanced with really lovely fruit. Now selling the 2023, and an unglaublich bargain @ £9.95!

Wieninger's Wiener Wein? Genau! Viennese biodynamic pioneer produces stunning wines in the Nussberg vineyard within the city boundary. This Riesling is intense, pure, citrussy, elegant, and gorgeous!

A fantastic, great value and versatile Wine Society red from the Nero d'Avola grape. Full, round, fruity, spicy, and with a slightly bitter finale. A lovely balanced wine for all seasons.

Lidl have this light and pale dry Hungarian white wine made in the Tokaji region from an unpronounceable grape. Round, fresh, with apple, pear, and even grape notes. Fabulous!

The Torrentés I bought in a wine shop a few years ago. Surprisingly good. Really lovely fresh tangy citrussy aperitif. 28/12/23, 'Vindubitabilis'

I found these under the stairs. It is from a Kent vineyard I walk near. Not huge, as expected, but still with some intensity, energy and slightly bitter fruit - cherryish. A nice lightish cool climate Pinot Noir with some maturity.

So here we go with Big Bertha, one of South Africa's iconic reds. A classic cedar aroma, and on the palate both red and black berry fruit flavours. It will still be drinking beautifully for many years. Champion wine.

Really quite lovely for a £16 (all in) Fronsac bought en primeur in 2016. Not hugely intense but with nice maturity, fruit, balance, and length.

This beautiful, dry, fresh, balanced, fruity and citrussy white from South West France. Délicieux sur la terrasse!
